Each week of the summer, Youth Development participants from the PEAS Farm and Youth Farm, harvest produce in the morning, load it in Garden City Harvest's big red box van in the afternoon, and drive across town to deliver produce to an affordable housing for seniors and those with disabilities. Along the way, they'll pick up produce from Orchard Gardens Neighborhood Farm and Community Garden.
Operation of the Mobile Market builds the youths' job skills and inspires relationships between teens and seniors. The participants of the Youth Development program are able to show off what they've grown with pride. The seniors often do not own a car. Without the Mobile Market, providing fresh, affordable vegetables right to their back door, many wouldn't eat many vegetables at all.
It is a social time for all involved. Seniors line up behind the Mobile Market stand, some leaning on canes, some using walkers, all excited to speak to the young folks and purchase some vegetables that taste like they came from their mother's garden.
