The Garden Organizer at each garden will determine the hours available for volunteers. Some people choose to work at the garden closest to them, however many choose a garden that has a volunteer schedule that better fits their free time. As the summer progresses the schedule has more morning shifts and fewer afternoon shifts.

Working Expectations

Volunteers are expected to ask the Garden Organizer for assignments, and check in when the task is completed. If you will be late or absent for your scheduled shift, please call your garden organizer in advance. This helps the garden organizer plan projects and seek alternate volunteers if needed.

Prepare for Variety
Volunteers should come to the site prepared for a variety of work and weather. Bring gloves, hat, rain gear, water, snacks, and sun protection. Closed toed shoes are required.

Smoking
Smoking is not allowed at the garden sites or greenhouses because of the tobacco mosaic virus, a plant disease that affects members of the tomato family. Smokers are asked to wash their hands before coming into contact with plants or soil.

Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteers for Veggies Program
The Garden Organizer gives out produce at the end of each shift to volunteers participating in this program. To qualify you must work a structured shift that is 4 hours long with two 15-minute breaks. Volunteers can earn 1/2 share (averages 5 pounds) of vegetables for working a shift at a garden. One full share is designed for a family of four for one week.

We are family friendly! Many sites have play areas and kid friendly gardens.
