Hello From Your New Community Gardens Assistant!
Hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet most of you at our opening day celebrations, but until then--hello! I’m Lauren, a tomato enthusiast, cat lover, and your new Community Gardens Assistant. I’m very excited to be a part of the Community Gardens program, which I consider to be one of the best parts of the Garden City.
I’m originally from Whitefish, Montana, but moved down after falling in love with Missoula while attending an NCAT food summit here. That summit was my first introduction to the food system and a day spent volunteering at PEAS was my first time ever on a farm. I was hooked. Back in Whitefish, I became a regular volunteer at a farm and for the food security network there. Moving to Missoula to finish my degree I found myself involved in even more food security related programs: I became a member of 1000 New Gardens, interned for the UM dining system, and spent my summers as a farm hand in the Bitterroot.
Working for the organization involved in my introduction to food systems feels like a dream. The notion that it’ll ever be hot enough outside to grow a tomato feels like an even crazier dream. I am so excited for both those dreams to be reality and to get to work in the dirt alongside all of you!
