Organic Gardening in Missoula: Composting and Vermicomposting

  • Garden City Harvest Orchard Gardens Farm, 210 Grove Street Missoula, MT, 59801 United States (map)

What transforms that moldering pile of food scraps and yard clippings into gardeners’ gold? Join Community Gardens Coordinator and vermicompost virtuoso DeHanza Kwong on a hands-on adventure into the principles, methods and benefits of composting.

This workshop will empower participants to reclaim their organic “waste” from the dump and turn it into an invaluable resource. You’ll learn about the microbes and creatures that inhabit compost, what keeps them happy, and how to establish a balanced, efficient system that fits your household. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to refine your existing system, this workshop will break down the concepts so that you are able to compost with confidence and success!

This workshop will conclude with a few words from friends at Soil Cycle who work tirelessly to make composting available in our community. Join us for a bike ride to tour their composting facility following the workshop!

From microbes to 3000 lb draft horses, DeHanza loves all living things. This care and attention led her to the world of gardening and serving her community. A librarian by trade, she devours webinars, articles, and anything else to learn new things and teach others. This is her second season with Garden City Harvest as the Community Gardens Coordinator. When she’s not working in the gardens, she can be found riding horses, making jewelry, brewing Kombucha, and tending to her worm bin and two darling cats.
