Native Pollinators: Recognizing and Identifying Native Bees

  • Garden City Harvest 1657 River Road Missoula United States (map)

Pollinators play a crucial role in growing food and sustaining life. While many of us recognize the importance of pollinators, do we know what specific pollinators are working to keep our crops growing? Join us for a walk through the garden and learn to recognize and identify different pollinator species and how to support them.

Rye Dickson, Garden City Harvest’s Community Gardens Coordinator, has dedicated years of research to examining the lives of these tiny yet essential creatures. They will lead you on an adventure of catching, identifying and discussing many of the pollinators that keep our farms growing.

Born and raised in Missoula, Rye loves spending most of their time outdoors. They earned degrees in Environmental Studies and Biology from the University of Montana where they were introduced to Garden City Harvest through farming and education internships at the PEAS farm. Rachel has spent the past eight years researching native bees and plants in Montana, Argentina, Kenya and Colorado. They have also worked for several non-profits as an outdoor educator and veggie farmer. They just moved back to Missoula and is excited to delve back into the local food system where they want to combine loves for community, education, science, and all other things related to eating and growing food.
