Workshop: Seed Saving Basics

  • Garden City Harvest 1657 River Road Missoula United States (map)

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Within Missoula’s limited growing season, a successful garden depends on growing plant varieties best suited for our climate. While seed catalogs change from year to year, saving seeds from well-adapted plants is one way to keep your favorite varieties on hand!

This workshop will introduce you to the careful art of saving your own seeds. Master Gardener Paul Buck will guide you through the process of seed collection and highlight the key questions to consider when determining which seeds to save.

The seed saving process will help you better understand the entire cycle of plant propagation and growth from year to year. Join us for an evening of discussion and learn to secure your cherished plant varieties for the future!

This workshop is available in partnership with Five Valleys Seed Library.

Five Valleys Seed Library (FVSL) has been providing Missoulians with carefully selected seeds since 2012. Now housed in the main office of Garden City Harvest, the library is open and available to the public during business hours with a smaller, outdoor kiosk accessible outside of these hours. FVLS welcomes seed donations from the community.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Paul Buck has nearly two decades of intensive gardening under his belt. A plant enthusiast, master gardener, and volunteer with Five Valleys Seed Library, he uses seed saving to identify and maintain plant varieties that grow best where he gardens. He is an expert in the area of high-altitude growing, having gardened in Colorado (nearly 8,000 feet above sea level) and Missoula (3,200 feet above sea level). In addition to saving his own seeds for over 10 years, Paul enjoys studying and propagating native bees.  He says that saving seeds brings him “greater emotional contact with gardening.”
