Food Security Project Partner - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana
The BCBSMT, Blue Impact grant supports Garden City Harvest’s Food Security Project, which works to reduce food insecurity and improve community health by increasing access to local, nutrient-rich produce. Funding will help sustain food production across Garden City Harvest’s four urban farms, where more than 140,000 pounds of fresh food are grown annually and distributed through 12 local service organizations serving Missoula’s most vulnerable residents.
The grant will also strengthen direct-to-community access points, including six mobile farm stands offering produce at reduced prices and weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm shares available on a sliding scale based on household income. In addition, funding will support Garden City Harvest’s community gardens, strategically primarily located in neighborhoods with higher rates of food insecurity, where families and individuals are empowered to grow food for their own tables through affordable, income-based plot rentals.
Together, these efforts increase access to healthy food, support household food budgets, and build long-term food security by connecting people to local agriculture and opportunities to grow their own food.
Community Garden Partner
Planetary Design in Bonner, MT has partnered with Garden City Harvest for the last three years to support our Community Gardens program. Whether it's increased household food security, exercise, or improved mental health, these garden spaces are a blank canvas. We welcome everyone, removing barriers of income through sliding fee scale and scholarships. Gardens built in the last 10 years are accessible to all and built to ADA standards. We share knowledge through our blogs and workshops that teach gardening skills for all levels.
Farm To School Partner
Missoula Bone and Joint has partnered with Garden City Harvest on a three year commitment to the Farm to School program. The Farm to School team encourages youth to explore connections between food, agriculture, and science. We offer hands-on, experiential learning opportunities at our farms, in school gardens, and in the classroom. At no cost to the schools, our Farm to School team maintains eight elementary gardens as outdoor learning centers and teaches over 2,000 lessons a year. Thank you Missoula Bone and Joint for partnering with us on this impactful program!
Mobile Market Partner
First Security Bank has partnered with Garden City Harvest on a three year commitment to our Mobile Market Program. Throughout the growing season, our Mobile Markets bring farm-fresh produce directly to the doorsteps of seniors and families in Missoula's affordable housing communities. We remove barriers to accessibility by offering produce at drastically discounted prices. Making fresh produce available to those most vulnerable in our community is made possible thanks to First Security Bank’s investment in the Mobile Market Program.
